Report the missing bag promptly
Go to the baggage services desk for the operating or handling airline and report that your checked luggage did not arrive. Airlines generally issue a Property Irregularity Report or similar tracing reference.
Include your bag-tag number, your contact details, a delivery address and a precise description. Confirm which airline manages the case when more than one carrier appears on your itinerary.
Save evidence and essential purchase receipts
Keep your baggage receipt, flight details, case reference and any messages. Ask how to check status and whether the airline provides a tracking portal.
If you need to purchase essential items while awaiting the bag, retain itemised receipts and review the airline’s reimbursement process before assuming all purchases are covered.
Follow up and understand the claim process
Delayed and permanently lost bags may follow different timelines and evidence requirements. Rules can differ for domestic and international flights, and certain international journeys may fall under the Montreal Convention.
Follow the airline’s written instructions, note deadlines and escalate through customer service or the relevant regulator if needed.
Policies and laws can change. Confirm urgent or booking-specific questions using the airline or regulator's official source.
